«The Light of the Moon

Which Clears the Pains and Sufferings of Heat»

Healing the Defects of the Eyes by Means of Lord Chenresig

Through the practice of Avalokitevara one has the possibility to achieve all four Buddha activities (of pacification, increase, control and destruction), and particularly to develop Compassion and Bodhicitta. In addition, to relieve even the smaller problems which arise in daily life such as eye disease, which could become great obstacles to one's spiritual practice, this sdhana of Avalokitevara is highly recommended.

[ fol. 578]

«The Light of the Moon

Which Clears the Pains and Sufferings of Heat»

Healing the Defects of the Eyes by Means of Lord Chenresig

[fol. 579]

I prostrate to the feet of the Lord Avalokitevara,

the deity who is the very form of the Compassion of all the Buddhas.

(Here are the instructions to clear all pain and suffering of the eye, the most refined organ. First, one should sit on a comfortable seat, having first cleaned the place well beforehand. Then do the practices of Refuge, Generating the Mind of Enlightenment and meditation on the Four Immeasurables.)

[ Refuge and Generating the Mind of Enlightenment]

[ I take refuge until Enlightenment

in the Buddhas, the Dharma and the Supreme Assembly.

Through the merit I collect by practising giving and the other perfections,

May I attain Buddhahood for the sake of all living beings.]

[Four Immeasurables]

[ May all living beings be endowed with happiness and the causes of happiness.

May all living beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.

May all living beings be endowed with the happiness that is free from suffering

May all living beings remain in a state of equanimity,

not having attachment for those they hold close,

nor aversion for those they keep at a distance.]

On the crown centre of one's ordinary body from the syllable PAM appears a lotus and from H moon disc, from which appears one's root Guru inseparable from the supreme Lord Avalokitevara, with the colour of refined crystal and a smiling and peaceful expression. The right hand is in the gesture of supreme giving and the left holds a white lotus. He is clad in deerskin and adorned with jewelled ornaments, with lower silken garments and standing with feet together, amidst radiance which emanates from his own body. Adorned at the three places with the three syllables, rays of light emanate from the syllable at the heart centre, inviting the wisdom beings along with the initiating deities. The wisdom beings and commitment beings become inseparably united, [fol. 580] The initiating deities confer the initiation. The excess of water becomes the Lord Amitbha adorning the crown of His head.

(thus making offerinqs)

[Praises]

[I prostrate to Lord Avalokitesvara,

with the eye of Compassion looking at all living beings,

not affected by any defects, white in color,

Adorned with an Enlightened Being.]

(thus offer praises)

[Mantra Recitation]

Then, at the heart centre of the Supreme Being in the centre of a moon disc the syllable HRI surrounded by the six-syllable mantra, emanates white and clear light with the nature of nectar, which touches one's own eyes and thus clears all types of defects, and causing one to obtain a new Wisdom Eye of Avalokitevara.

(Recite the six-syllable mantra while concentrating on this visualisation.)

(OM MANI PADME HM)

(After reciting the six-syllable mantra 1000 times, recite :)

OM SÄLE SÄLE MÜN SÄLE KÜN HRIK SVAHA

(Recite at least 300 times after every 1000 recitations of OM MAN PADME HUM)

[Prayers of Request]

0 Guru Avalokitevara, embodiment of all Three Objects of Refuge;

I earnestly beseech You, with great enthusiasm

from the depths of my heart,

Please purify all the defects of my eyes,

Whatever has come either through previous karma

or through immediate circumstances.

Bless me to obtain the Wisdom Eye like that of the Supreme Lore

By purifying all these defects.

(Recite seven times, with very strong faith and confidence.)

[fol. 581]

The Lord blows my eyes with his saliva, clearing all the defects of my eyes like the sky being cleared of all the clouds.

(Thinking thus, moisten the ring finger of the left hand with your own saliva and gently rub your eyes. At the end, again recite:)

The Guru Avalokitevara dissolves through the crown of one's own head.

(Then do the prayers of dedication.)

[Dedication]

[Through the merit of this practice,

May I quickly attain the state of Lord Avalokitevara,

and lead all living beings, without exception,

to the state of Enlightenment.]

Thus, if one does this practice every day before having spoken a word to

anyone, there is no doubt of not being able to clear all the defects of the eyes.

[Colophon]

This practice for clearing all the pains of the eyes was requested for a daily practice by the faithful Amchö text reader Dölma Bum. It was written by the Bhiku of the Buddha's teachings Losang Chökyi Wangchuk (Taqphu) at his own meditation house.

Through the merit of this

May all living beings attain the undefiled Wisdom Eye.
